This social justice article will be focusing on LGBTQ+ issues. In the past few years, a lot of great things have been happening, but also lots of bad things. Since the world is in a fairly bad place right now, so I’m going to focus on the good LGBTQ+ things happening recently in the world.

In 2016, Obama announced the first national monument to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights; the Stonewall National Monument. This is a big milestone because it was the first time that a big public monument, that anyone can see, was showing a very important part of our history that was often forgotten until then.

On June 30th, 2016, the ban on transgender people openly serving in the military was lifted. But our current, great, mature, president, tried to ban transgender people serving in the military again, through twitter. Starting January 1st, transgender people can again serve in the military. This is good, because the Pentagon is defying the current President’s orders.

On June 27th, 2017, DC residents can choose a gender neutral option on their driver’s license. This is great representation for the large part of the LGBTQ+ community that don’t identify with the gender binary. It’s also important because now they can be themselves, and more openly identify as non-binary or agender. Hopefully someday in the future all states will have that option.
