Stray cats are a part of the community in the metropolis of Istanbul, Turkey. For thousands of years, they have wandered in and out of people’s lives, helping to weave the tapestry of rich culture in the old city.

If there was a city in the United States that had hundreds of thousands of cats running around, that would be viewed as a problem. In Istanbul, the locals there can’t imagine a life without cats.

These cats have no definite owners. They live freely in the city, come and go as they please, stopping every now and then to receive a few belly rubs or get a bite to eat from one of the locals. Kedi shows the joy and the meaning that these cats bring to the citizens of Istanbul.

Everyone who lives in Istanbul has a story about a cat. Each story is different: the cats can lead to good luck, they can change your mental state, they can turn your whole life around even, but all of these stories are always very personal to the storyteller, and moving to the audience.

In this film, you get to peek into the lives of seven different cats. Every cat is different, just like a human, therefore the citizens shown in the movie highlight the personality traits of these cats that they interact with on a frequent basis. These cats are their friends, their hunters, their gentlemen, in their lives.

According to the people of Istanbul, cats absorb negative energy, and they can also have healing powers. Some citizens in the film had problems, but the cats provided a way for recovery from their mental states.

The people also think of cats like they were God-like creatures. They elevate the cats above the dogs, because cats know better than to think of humans as God.

This charming documentary is certainly worth seeing, without a doubt. It will make you laugh, as well as touch your heart.
