What is there to know about the girls soccer team this year?

Many students at Roosevelt enjoy going to the school’s football games, even though there are many other sports teams at the school.

Recently the JV and varsity teams have merged together to become one team. So the journalists at Roosevelt decided to learn a bit more about the girls soccer team.

The new singular girls soccer team had gotten a new coach this year. Coach Stephanie Feakes-Young is an English teacher at Roosevelt High, and has become the team’s new coach after the last coach had to retire at the beginning of this season.

“I’ve been involved in the soccer program for about 4 years, and it’s been great to see the program grow every year. The first two years I was the Assistant Varsity coach because we didn’t have enough girls to have a Varsity and JV team.”

In an interview, Feakes-Young explained a bit about what she likes most about the team.

“Since I am also a teacher at Roosevelt, it is fun to get to know students outside of the classroom.  It gives me an opportunity to get to know students at Roosevelt in a new way.”

Another point Feakes-Young spoke about was about what her personal goal as a coach is.

“My official coaching purpose statement is: ‘I will respect my players, and I want them to respect their teammates, themselves and others.  I want them to be able to feel and show empathy for not only their teammates, but for the other team.  I want them to learn to balance school, work, and a personal life in a healthy way.’”

Overall, this season the girls soccer team had a record of 7 wins and 8 losses, was placed in the 13th spot in their bracket of 16 teams to complete in the playoffs, and had lost their first game in the playoffs against South Saint Paul High School with a score of 9-0.

Many members of the soccer team mentioned how excited they are for next years team, hopefully with a few more players. Good job, Teddies!
